Gli Oscar del 1997

24 marzo 1997, allo Shrine Auditorium di Los Angeles l’attore americano Billy Cristal apre la serata dedicata alla consegna degli Academy awards per i film del 1996, gli Oscar del cinema.
E’ un’annata in tono minore, perchè non c’è il film dominatore dell’anno.
I film con più nomination sono, nell’ordine, Il paziente inglese (The English Patient), regia di Anthony Minghella, al suo terzo film e che si presenta con ben 12 nomination, Fargo per la regia di Joel Coen che ha sette nomination,Shine per la regia di Scott Hicks che ha ugualmente sette nomination e infine Jerry Maguire regia di Cameron Crowe con 5 nomination.

Vince Il paziente inglese e il regista Minghella (scomparso poi prematuramente a 54 anni) vince il premio per la miglior regia; alla fine il film otterrà sette statuette globali.
Grande sorpresa per l’attribuzione dell’Oscar per il miglior attore che va all’attore e produttore cinematografico australiano Geoffrey Rush interprete del film Shine, che batte il grande favorito Ralph Fiennes, interprete di Il paziente inglese.
La statuetta come miglior attrice protagonista, ed anche questa è una sorpresa,va a Frances McDormand interprete di fargo che batte la super favorita Diane Keaton mentre l’unico Oscar per un interprete del film Il paziente inglese va a Juliette Binoche, miglior attrice non protagonista.Cuba Gooding Jr. con Jerry Maguire vince l’Oscar come miglior attore non protagonista.
I film Evita e Jerry Maguire portano a casa solo una statuetta su 5 nomination, mentre tra i film premiati ci sono Indipendence day di Roland Emmerich Oscar per gli effetti speciali e Spiriti nelle tenebre Oscar per il miglior sonoro.
Segreti e bugie di Mike Leigh non vince nulla nonostante le 5 nomination.
